I'm in shock. Many days of work has just disappeared

I’m on a Mac laptop and I don’t use sync. The pages are still there, but all the notes and links within most of them (but not all, which is very weird) are gone. I’ve never had anything like this happen since I downloaded Logseq several years ago. I checked the graph and my computer files and I can see the index, but not the actual pages or the links. Where are they? Is there any way to get them back?

I was creating an index of pages with notes and links to websites - as a way to organize my tabs into topics and begin laying the foundation for several articles. I started with one ‘central page’ - and then topics and subtopics (pages) under that, creating a conventional ‘folder’ system (I need the structure). Unfortunately I was trying to get Logseq to appear on the same window as the one I was working on (with many tabs still to sort) and had closed it and reopened it several times. Did that trigger this?

Would be profoundly grateful for any assistance.

Ok - apologies. Now I’ve calmed down (and read a few posts) I have found all my pages in my mac files with the info in them (and am much relieved). I’ve read a few posts on re-connecting but not making much sense to me - will keep reading . . .

Please note: I do not use sync - I am just on my Mac laptop. Also, I deleted all my plugins about a month ago - so no interference there.
I cleared the cache and now those pages that were in the pages file are gone - only the few that are still showing up with text and links are there. The absent files are are still in the bak file (but not all of them). In my panic I started a new file and now can’t get back to my old one. The current one is not linking with my original graph. These are the messages I’m getting:
" It seems that you are trying to open a Logseq graph folder with nested graph. Please unlink this graph and choose a correct folder."
I’ve been reading posts on how to unlink graphs and I’m afraid nothing is clear enough for me to act on.
And:
“The file “pages/pages/contents.md” will be skipped because another file “pages/contents.md” has the same page title.”
I only have one folder for Logseq and one graph (I did have two others, but who knows where they’ve gone - somewhere along the way I seem to remember a message saying they’ve been decommissioned. Would like to get at least one of them back.)
At this point would really appreciate some help. If this is an easy solve - would be happy with a recommendation/link to a how-to site or video - my searching is not coming up with much.
Perhaps I’m in the wrong section - will send an message to the email.

That’s a poor excuse for not having regular backups for “many days of work”. Especially if you are using alpha/beta quality software.

Sorry you’ve run into troubles @ange. But Logseq being local and beta software, you really need to take regular backups.

Also, randomly clicking buttons without exactly knowing what they do is extremely dangerous. If you press the “Clear cache” button you wipe Logseq’s in-memory database, and all changes that weren’t written to disk are then permanently gone. Logseq has some built-in safety features (for example, there’s a backup folder in logseq/bak inside your graph folder—it seems like you’ve found it). But it’s not good practice to only lean on those.

In this case issue in this case is likely a nested graph. That happens when you create a new graph inside an existing folder (for example when selecting the folder when creating the new graph). The only way out is to manually (using Finder on Mac) move the nested pages, journals, etc. folders into their own graph folder. MAKE SURE TO FIRST UNLINK YOUR GRAPH! The errors you get tell you the issue, and also where your other graphs have likely gone (inside the other folder):

You say you don’t use Logseq Sync, but do you use any other syncing solution? Because the situation you describe isn’t uncommon when you use iCloud (though it could also just be the nested graph issue).

When you use iCloud (or something similar, like Dropbox or Google Drive) and open Logseq in two windows at once, the combination of Logseq writing from two windows to disk means the cloud sync service can get confused and starts to overwrite files on disk with older versions. Though again, it could be the nested graph issue…

Opening multiple windows at once was disabled in certain circumstances in newer versions. But as you say you’ve downloaded Logseq “years ago”, it could be that you never updated so you’re still running an old version. That would also explain why you’d be able to create a nested graph (because newer versions of Logseq have protection built-in to avoid this issue).

Unfortunately, with no specific details in your posts, it’s impossible to tell what it could be or how to fix things. It helps if you can tell us exact version numbers of your OS and Logseq, and give additional details about your setup like where you’ve stored your graph or what other devices you use in combination with your graph.
