Is there a way to turn off the automatic creation of non-existing pages?

When searching for a node or when auto-completing a node reference, there are times when I accidentally hit enter prematurely (and sometimes without realizing it) and a page is created instead of linking to the one I intended. There are many scenarios when this occurs, and since I don’t really use pages, let alone create them on the fly, it creates a fair amount of friction in everyday usage.

Is there a configuration option somewhere that controls whether or not to:

  1. create a non-existing page when referenced in another block
  2. suggest to create a page when performing a search
