Logseq MD updates moving forward

Logseq DB looks really cool and I am rooting for the team but it seems it will take years for it to get up to par with Logseq MD functionality-wise. Built-in reveal.js and regex are needed for my workflow not to mention the many community-built plugins.

It seems like I will have to keep on using Logseq MD in the meantime. My question is, will you publish critical updates and bug fixes on the Logseq MD for the foreseeable feature or you’ll abandon it altogether?

You’ll probably want a more official answer but as no-one’s answers yet:

They’ve never said anything about discontinuing the MD version. In fact we’ve had a chart (which I can’t find easily on my phone) outlining which features will be available with which graphs (MD Vs DB) which pretty heavily implies they’ll still support it even if they haven’t explicitly said that.

I hope that helps for now.

@Ramses has suggested the two versions of the apps will eventually be merged and “database” will become one more “mode” alongside markdown and org.

WTF!!?? To merge the 2 versions? IMO MD version means zero dependency on any type of technologies (like db) other than .txt files…

I might be wrong but I think what we’re talking about is having a single programme that you can make 2 different graphs with.

Like how you can with the current programme. You can make a MD graph or an Org graph.

Yes, I’m certain this is what Ramses was getting at. It’s just you’ll only need to install one app and then decide how you want to use it. Right now the database version is being developed separately on a completely different git branch.

Logseq, starting version 0.11.x will support MD and DB. You can test both today, in alpha. If you encounter bugs, please report them.
When in doubt about Logseq’s new version,we are trying to keep these facts in the FAQ: Logseq DB Unofficial FAQ
If there is a question not answered, add comment with the question .

Will org be added before beta launch?

I’ve asked this in the discord but at the time no one knew for sure, but maybe you can confirm. Does the MD graph mode allow access to newer features too? Or is the MD graph mode “feature-frozen” and is just a legacy mode? For example, query views are in the DB version. Does using an MD graph also allow using query views, or that’s exclusively a DB graph feature?

Here’s a chart of the relevant features. Is this what you’re looking for?

It depends on the feature whether it can be supported by just MD files, or if it requires a database. The example you mention (query views) depends on a lot of metadata that only a proper database can store, so that feature is only for the DB mode.

On the other hand, a feature like the (improved) flashcards depends mostly on an algorithm, so that refreshed feature is available in both the DB and MD modes.

Thank you for both the official and community answers. To sum up:

  • Logseq, starting with version 0.11.x will support both MD and DB modes.
  • Logseq DB can export the database in MD files which is different from MD mode.
  • MD mode will work, more or less, as usual.
  • DB mode will have some new features but does not support everything (yet) that the MD mode has.
  • New features that are compatible with both modes will appear in both modes, others will be DB only.

This is very reassuring!

Wow, now that’s very helpful and reassuring indeed, @Ramses. Thanks a lot! When can we expect the desktop version 0.11.x to be released? :folded_hands:

I can’t give you a date myself but it might be worth joining the discord.

We get official announcements on here but the day to day chat is on there and it very much keeps you in the loop. Helped me to feel the progress rather than it just feeling silent.
