Can someone from the logseq team clarify the information below, found at the top of the faq page? Does this mean there will be paid local-only features?
Is logseq free? Do you plan to charge for the Logseq app (desktop/web/mobile)?
TLDR: Logseq is free but Logseq Pro (coming soon) is not.
What features does Logseq Pro have?
Syncing with our own storage
Real-time collaboration Some other features in the future
Notice that some local features in the future might be included in Logseq Pro too. A local feature doesn’t have to rely on our servers.
The reason is that we believe tools should be built in a local-first way to protect privacy and be performant, which means we’re trying to do most things locally, and only use the servers when we have to. But the truth is that almost all the features (except sync, collaboration) can be built without the servers. If all the local features in the future are free, it’ll be very hard for us to keep developing the best features.
Almost 4 years ago, when Logseq was very much a baby still. In the message you screenshotted, there’s no mention of local features being paid.
In the meanwhile, @tienson has already clarified that Logseq Pro will only consist of hosted services that cost money to run (like sync, real-time collaboration, publishing).
Ah, I had not read the FAQ—sorry about that. I assume @tienson wrote that, so in that case what’s in the FAQ is correct. But there are no foreseeable local features that I’ve heard any talk about to put them in Logseq Pro; only the three aforementioned features:
To be clear: I don’t make these decisions, I’m just here to streamline things in the community. If there are more questions, I hope Tienson will chime in. But honestly, this is a never-ending discussion and it’s been discussed several times already. Unless Tienson gives other information, I’d just assume to only have to pay for hosted services (which are entirely optional and you can always use other solutions to achieve similar results).
Yeah, I understand. Hopefully the devs will be able to provide some clarity on this eventually. Could be they simply don’t know yet, which is why information is inconsistent across the oficial channels.
